THE TAI SUI
In the long encounter of Chinese cosmology and Buddhism, the Tai Sui — the ruling celestial of each year — is honoured as a guardian of the cycles of time. Each lunar new year a different Tai Sui general assumes the throne of the year.
The practice rests on a simple Buddhist principle: the offering of light is a form of generosity, a dispelling of darkness, and a sustained prayer. When the lamp is consecrated, prayers are offered to the year's Tai Sui general, and the lamp burns through the year as a continuous supplication.

THE YEARLY GUARDIAN
In Chinese tradition, each year is guarded by a specific Tai Sui — the celestial ruler of the year, sent by heaven to watch over humanity and protect against calamity. The sixty-year cycle of Jiazi (sexagenary cycle) assigns a different ruling deity each year, and the one currently on duty is known as the "Yearly Tai Sui" or "Benming Tai Sui".
The Yearly Tai Sui observes the good and evil deeds of humanity. As the old saying goes: "When Tai Sui sits overhead, without joy there may be disaster." Therefore, honouring Tai Sui through sincere practice, lighting lamps, and accumulating merit can eliminate calamities, increase blessings, and bring health and peace throughout the year.
